Yes, really.
Oz was diagnosed today, after a chest Xray.
Last night was one of those hellish nights (we've all been there) where we were sitting up doing back-to-back nebs at 1:00AM. Poor guy couldn't stop coughing. And he's been running a fever (lower-grade) since Tuesday AM.
After barely sleeping, I can't tell you how much fun it was to run Oz around the hospital (where our pulmonologist's office is) and then down to X-ray, with ornery Ig in tow. Blecccch.
Xray showed a mild pneumonia, and since his sats were at 100 and he sounded pretty clear, we don't need oral steroids.
Anyway, we're starting antibiotics tonight. Hopefully, we'll have more sleep, less coughing, and healthier boys in the very near future.

I recently came across your blog and I just wanted to say that I can relate. I have a 4-year old daughter with asthma. It took four hospitalizations before she got the diagnosis and the proper medications. But every time she gets a cold we are doing the same drill with the nebulizer all night long. She takes an inhaled steroid twice a day now that has worked really well. Called Q-var.
Those inhaled steroids are like magic, aren't they? If Oz hadn't been on Flovent for the last 4 years, he'd certainly be in the hospital right now!
Our Bryn was like your daughter. He ended up in the ER every time he got a cold or strep throat. He was prone to sinus infections, and those were his worst and most frequent triggers. Once his adenoids were removed, he went from taking a high dose of Flovent (like Qvar), Singular and Nasonex to being med- and flare-free! He was "fired" by our pulmonologist a few years later.
I hope you have the same good luck. I'm glad you found a doctor who *gets it* and have gotten the right meds. Hopefully, you'll have fewer "neb nights" in your future!
Pneumonia blows!!!
I apologize for being so crude but there really is no delicate way to say it. My daughter had over 7 pneumonias last year alone.
I sincerely hope your son improves ASAP. It's sounds like you're doing a great job monitoring his symptoms.

I am Dr Phillips, I believe this problem could be fixed completely by appropriate acid inhibition. We treat children who have the myriad problems you describe and there real problem is uncontrolled acid reflux.
